Drone workshop

Safety guide for parents and children

Print this page and keep it near the work area. These rules are a summary and do not replace the instructions that come with the kit or direction from your instructor.

Battery safety card

  • Only use the battery and charger supplied in the Drone Build Box.
  • Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface such as a ceramic tile or metal tray, in view of an adult, never overnight.
  • Stop using any battery that is swollen, hot, dented or damaged. Keep it away from other items and tell the instructor.
  • Do not charge or fly a battery that is warm from use. Let it cool first.
  • Store batteries at room temperature, away from heat, direct sun and metal objects.
  • Do not dispose of batteries in household rubbish. Ask us or your local battery recycling program.

Soldering safety card (Solder Track)

  • An adult must be in the room for every soldering step.
  • Work in a ventilated space on a heat-resistant mat. Tie back long hair and wear safety glasses.
  • The iron is hot enough to burn. Always return it to its stand. Never put it down on the table.
  • Wash hands after soldering and before eating. Keep food and drink away from the work area.
  • Unplug the iron when finished and let it cool fully before putting it away.

Flying safety card

  • Fly only after the lead instructor has confirmed your build passed its safety check.
  • Clear the space of people, pets, windows and breakables. Keep fingers and faces away from the propellers.
  • Remove the propellers while testing motors, and when charging or working on the drone.
  • Fly low and slow at first. Land at once if anyone enters the space.
  • Follow Canadian rules for small drones. Never fly near airports, crowds, roads or other people’s property.
